Resumes & Cover Letters
Writing resumes and cover letters can be a daunting task. Below are a few quick tips specifically for MHGS Alumni.
Common Questions/Problems for MHGS Alumni:
- "MHGS Code": During your time at Mars Hill Graduate School, you've learned a community vocabulary -- one that is meaningful and ripe within these walls. Often, these terms find their way into resumes and cover letters. Take care to avoid the use of Mars Hillian terms.
- Art and Form: As a school that promotes artistic expression, graduates typically translate this into artful resumes and cover letters. A certain level of uniqueness does indeed make your pieces stand out. However, take care to maintain a clean, clear and crisp resume that also communicates content.
- Research: Discovery is part of the task. Finding a job is much more than sending in a resume. Take the time to research, to read and to decipher whether or not the positions/companies for which you are applying are a good fit for you. Walking with confidence gained from knowledge will enhance your search.
Networking
Twice a year, we host a "Networking Luncheon" at MHGS. Alumni from all programs are encouraged to attend, finding creative ways to network and resource one another. These are rich times for graduates to connect, gain insight and encouragement from others who are traveling the same road. Contact Martha Hopler for more information about upcoming events.
We also encourage and help facilitate similar gatherings around the country. If you are interested in either finding out more or starting a group in your area, contact Martha Hopler.
